Five school buses challaned

Under the Safe School Vahan Policy, the Regional Transport Department and Child Protection Department have launched a campaign in the district to ensure safety of school-going children, Deputy Commissioner Sona Thind said.

Officials had been directed to inspect each and every bus of educational institutions, besides private vehicles ferrying students to ensure that these comply with the rules framed under the Safe Vahan Policy, the DC said.

Thind said during the campaign random inspection of school buses was being done during which five buses were challaned and fined on the spot.

District Child Protection Officer Harbhajan Singh Mahimi said the safety of the schoolchildren was very important and keeping this in mind parents of should not allow underage driving.

“It is equally important that the school buses in which the children travel follow the rules as per the Safe School Vehicle Policy,” he said.

Mahimi added that during checking many shortcomings were found in the school buses such as no female attendants, seating children more than the capacity, incomplete documents, driver and attendant not wearing uniforms, CCTV cameras not working, etc.
