The Punjabi University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) elections are now on the cards. Existing office-bearers of the association have written to the university Registrar regarding holding of the elections by mid-September. A group of faculty members associated with the Progressive Teachers’ Alliance (PTA) has also been demanding to hold fresh elections before the completion of one-year term of PUTA office-bearers.

PUTA office-bearers said they held a meeting after which it was decided that elections to the body should be held by September 13. Meanwhile, professors with the PTA have been raising the matter of holding the elections since early August. Members had written to the PUTA and the university Registrar as well.

Dr Bhupinder Singh Virk said, “The PUTA elections were supposed to be held in August. The term of the present body ends by August 31. We had told the university Registrar to hold fresh elections as there can’t be any extension after that.” — TNS
