A man drowned in floodwater at Devigarh’s Chamaru village even as the Patiala district administration once again sounded the alert due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Ghaggar and its tributary Tangri.

Parminder Singh, a plumber, had slipped into the floodwater while on his way back home on Saturday night. On Monday, the administration issued another advisory asking residents of several Rajpura, Ghanaur and Sanaur sub-divisons to stay alert. The administration has deployed MGNREGA workers to plug any embankment breaches.

The advisory comes as the water level in the Ghaggar once again increased at Bhankharpur. It advised residents of Untsar, Nanheri, Sanjarpur, Lachhru, Kamalpur, Rampur, Saunta and Maru and Chamaru villages not to go near the river. Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav said residents have been cautioned against taking dirt roads and refrain from unnecessary travel.
