Patiala, January 6
The city came to a standstill as Congress workers, led by local MP Preneet Kaur, and employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) held protests on road amid continuous rain today. Due to the protests, areas leading from the city bus stand to the PSPCL office on Mall Road towards the Fountain Chowk, from NIS to the Fountain Chowk, and toward the railway crossing 22 remained choked for over two hours during peak hours.
The protests were held while Section 144 of the CrPC had already been imposed in the city.
KK Malhotra, president, Congress Committee (Urban), said the party workers had sought prior permission for holding the protest from the office of the SDM as the DC was on leave. “We held the protest for a brief moment, raised concern over the important issue of attack at the gurdwara in Nankana Sahib without disturbing the traffic,” he said.
The party leaders, including MP Preneet Kaur; KK Sharma, chairman, PRTC; KK Malhotra along with a number of residents were present on the site. Preneet Kaur said, “The Central Government should take up the issue of atrocities against Sikhs in Pakistan at the international level and take steps to ensure justice to the victims and ensure their safety.”
She also condemned the violence at JNU in Delhi and exhorted the Centre to pay attention at the financial condition of the country.
PSPCL staff demand regularisation of services
Workers of the PSPCL associated with Technical Services Union, thermal contract workers co-ordination committee, Theka Mulajam Sanghrash Committee and Powercom and Transco Theka Mulajam Union Punjab was carried out from 12.30 pm to 4 pm. The protesters while raising their demands of new hiring at the PSPCL, regularisation of jobs, rehiring of dismissed leaders blocked the road from the Sheran Wala Gate to the Fountain Chowk. Pramod Kumar, General Secretary, Technical Services Union, said they had informed the administration and the officials of PSPCL about their protest.
