The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the student arrived around 30 minutes late for a one-hour test.

Dr Lal Chand, who was invigilating the exam, refused to allow him to sit, citing the delay.

Eyewitnesses said the student initially left the hall but returned moments later carrying an iron bench. Before Dr Chand could react, the student allegedly struck him on the head and fled the scene.

Dr Chand was rushed to the University Hospital and later referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. “The CT scan of the patient has been conducted. No stitches have been applied so far,” said Dr Vishal Chopra, Medical Superintendent, Rajindra Hospital.

Head of Department Dr Jaswinder Singh expressed deep regret over the incident and confirmed that university authorities had been informed.

A senior university official, requesting anonymity, stated that the faculty member was receiving treatment and that “appropriate legal action will be taken” against the student.

The police have not yet been informed about the incident.
