Addressing the closing ceremony of the first Rural Tourism and Handicraft Workshop, Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Arvind said a series of handicraft workshops would be conducted to encourage self-employment.

Emphasising the need to modernise traditional handicrafts with the help of new technology, Professor Arvind said at present, there was a need to move forward with the combination of old and new handicrafts, so that the old products could be presented in a new form in an attractive manner.

He also announced the opening of a sales centre on the university campus for the products produced by the students.

Meanwhile, Registrar Navjot Kaur emphasised the importance of economic independence of women. She said this initiative of the university would help women to come forward and motivate them to be economically independent.

Dr Balwinder Singh Sooch, in charge of this programme, said 27 students received training at this workshop. The 15-day workshop for women trainees was started on February 8.
