Medical student’s ‘suicide’ in Patiala: Youth Congress chief writes to CM, demands fair probe

Punjab Youth Congress president today demanded a free and fair probe into the alleged suicide of a medical student who hailed from Tamil Nadu.

A few resident doctors alleged that some of their counterparts were being discouraged to record their statements before the Patiala police.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Youth Congress chief Mohit Mohindra said, “It is imperative that transparency and justice prevail in the matter. A free and fair probe should be conducted as per the recommendations of the Resident Doctors’ Association, GMC, and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.”

The Congress leader also sought a rise in stipend for MBBS students doing internships at par with the Central Government run medical institutes.

“Our medical students are paying double fee, but they receive lower stipends. This disparity is causing immense financial strain and demoralise the students,” said Mohindra.

He asked the Mann government about the steps being taken to address the disparity in internships.

Mohindra said, “Why are resident doctors being discouraged from recording their statements in a suicide case?”

On July 20, Subaashini R, (29), a post-graduate medical student at the Government Medical College in Patiala had administered something “poisonous” with an injection in her hostel room.
