Cracking a whip on cart owners, who were allegedly indulging in illegal sand mining, have been arrested and their carts confiscated by local Mining Department officials in the wee hours today. As many as 14 cart owners were arrested along with as many carts confiscated.

Mining inspector Yuvraj Singh said on a tip-off, a barrier was laid near Ferozepur-Fazilka road flyover. The carts coming from Ferozepur road were intercepted while those were entering Fazilka town.

The officials found 14 cart owners involved in illegal sand mining. The sand-loaded carts have also been confiscated and have been parked around the city police station for the time being.

All the accused have been booked under Section 379 of the IPC and Section 4 of the Mining and Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act. City police station SHO said the accused would be produced in the local court.
