Sangrur: A team of the Malerkotla Crime Investigations Agency (CIA) arrested three persons and seized 150 kg of poppy husk from their possession. “The accused, Shehbaz, Khalil and Gurdeep Singh, were arrested from the Samsun Colony. We have registered a case and started further investigation,” said Malerkotla DSP (D) Ranjit Singh. TNS

Ferozepur: One person was killed in a dispute over possession of Panchayat land in Sadhu Shah Wala village here. The deceased, Shamsher Singh, had been cultivating Panchayat land for the last 15 years while the accused, village sarpanch Virsa Singh, wanted to take possession of the said land. Unemployed stage protest at job fair in Muktsar

Muktsar: Members of the BEd-TET Pass Unemployed Teachers’ Union on Thursday lodged a protest at the venue of a job fair in Muktsar town. They said despite being qualified and fulfilling the eligibility criteria, they were jobless. “These job fairs are mere drama. We will continue to stage protests in future too,” they said. TNS

Army expedition team scales Mt Bhagirathi

Muktsar: An Army mountaineering expedition team of Chetak Corps, which started from Suratgarh in Sriganganagar on August 4, has successfully summited Mount Bhagirathi-II (6,521m). The expedition was undertaken as a tribute to the valour of the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pak war as part of Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebration. Lt Col Amitabh Sharma said the Daredevil XIV team, led by Captain B Manoj Kumar and Naib Subedar Mala Ram, carried out an arduous trek braving the challenging weather and harsh conditions. OC
