Health officials in Sriganganagar, 40 km from Abohar, today confirmed that at least two Covid patients had died due to black fungus.

One of them was Manjit Kaur (70), wife of a former councillor Baldev Singh. She was under treatment at a private hospital.

The other patient was Bachitter Singh (58) of Chak 3MD village, who was admitted to the district Civil Hospital on May 20. He developed fungus symptoms and was advised endoscopy but died before it was conducted. Two suspected fungus patients were referred to Jaipur.

Officials said the demand for 200 liposomal amphotericin B injections was submitted by the district hospital to the state headquarters at Jaipur but only 48 injections were supplied to PBM Hospital in Bikaner where endoscopic surgery arrangements were being made.

Meanwhile, chaotic scenes were witnessed at some vaccination centers as people violated advisories on social distancing with no arrangements to control the crowd in place.
