Two persons, including a woman, drowned in the Uppar Bari Doab Canal while taking a selfie in the Sultanwind area on Monday.

While the body of the man, identified Karnvir Singh of Guru Nanak Pura in Jalandhar, was recovered, the divers are looking for the body of the woman.

The woman, Jasmeet Kaur, was a resident of Mohalla Pahar Singh in Raho village of Nawanshahr.

According to the police, both had come to pay obeisance at Gurudwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji. The divers were summoned from Phillaur to recover the bodies by the authorities.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Parvesh Chopra said onlookers told them that the victims had taken a selfie before the incident.

“While taking a selfie, the woman lost balance and fell into the canal. In order to save her, the boy also jumped into it. Unfortunately, both drowned in the water body,” said the ACP while adding that families of both were informed about the incident.

The police have recovered a scooter from near the spot. Two mobile phones were also found from there.

The police found their Aadhaar cards on the mobile phones and informed their families.
