All accused, barring one, are locals. The police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the killing. SSP said the police were looking into all possible angles, including that of ideological aspect and personal enmity.

Sources said Jatin allegedly hatched the plan and failed to pay the other accused as promised. The SSP said all the accused had even gone to UP twice to procure the weapon of crime. On November 13, the accused planned the murder at Kanav’s residence, where they had gathered to celebrate his birthday, said the SSP, adding that later they conducted recce of the area and studied Naveen’s daily routine before executing the plan.

It was Badal and one another accused who shot at Naveen," said SSP, adding that after the incident, Jatin, who is an auto-rickshaw driver, dropped all of them at the bus stand. "The accused later took shelter at friends' residences for some time before dispersing in separate directions,” said the SSP, adding that the police were close to nabbing the remaining accused.
