With three more deaths at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here, the hooch tragedy toll in the Majitha subdivision went up to 27 on Thursday.

The latest victims were identified as Chanan Singh (42) of Bhangwan village, Sarwan Singh (47) of Bhangali Kalan village and Rajesh (45) of Galowali Kullian village. The condition of a victim continued to be critical and he was under treatment at the ICU of the hospital. Six persons were discharged from the hospital after their condition improved.

Sources in the police said key accused in the case Sahib Singh learnt making illicit liquor using methanol via the Internet. Earlier, he used to manufacture hooch from ethanol and by setting up an illegal distillery. Despite being arrested several times, he did not give up the illegal trade.
