To ensure strict implementation of anti-tobacco laws, 4,671 challans have been issued under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA)-2003 in the past eight months. It was disclosed by Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kumar Rahul at a meeting of the state-level coordination committee.

Kumar said the government had initiated a drive to eradicate tobacco use, under which sale of e-cigarettes, gutkha/pan masala with tobacco is banned in the state. Hookah bars have also been permanently banned in the state after an amendment to the COTPA-2003 (Punjab Amendment Act, 2018). He directed all stakeholder departments not to be lenient towards violators. — TNS
