The Local Government Department has identified at least 52 major defaulters of commercial property tax in the state, who owe over Rs 2.28 crore to the state exchequer

After the deadline for the one-time settlement (OTS) scheme introduced by the state government for property tax collection in Punjab ended on August 31, the department has started the process to send notices to property owners in 13 municipal corporations, 167 municipal councils and other municipal bodies.

In the first phase, notices are being sent to property owners in 52 municipal bodies to recover the the outstanding amount of Rs 2.28 crore. As per the rules, two notices are first sent for payment of the outstanding amount, while the third notice initiates the process of sealing the property.
