The police have arrested eight persons and busted an illegal mining scam on the Sutlej bed adjoining Sherpur Taiba village in the district’s Dharamkot subdivision, senior officials said here today.

The accused — Karnail Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Surjan Singh, Malkit Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Rajanpreet Singh, Sahib Singh and Surinder Singh — have been booked under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, and Section 21 (3) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act at Dharamkot police station.

The police said they had impounded eight heavy vehicles, including five tractor-trailers and tippers loaded with sand, one JCB and two poclain machines. — TNS
