AAP, Cong workers clash in Zira, ex-MLA injured

Former Zira MLA and DCC president Kulbir Singh was injured in a violent clash between AAP and Congress workers over the panchayat election nomination process in Zira. The incident occurred at Jiwan Mall Government Middle School when Congress workers, led by Kulbir Singh, approached the nomination centre. A confrontation between AAP and Congress supporters escalated into stone-pelting, during which Kulbir was struck in the face.

The police intervened by firing rounds into the air and using a water cannon to disperse the crowd. Kulbir alleged that he had been placed under house arrest by the police and was obstructed from reaching the centre with his supporters. He also accused the administration of favouring AAP workers, claiming they were allowed to carry stones without the police intervention, despite prior warnings to officials.

Ramnish Chaudhary, SP (Hq) Fazilka, confirmed the clash and said the situation was brought under control, with an investigation ongoing. AAP MLA Naresh Kataria, however, accused Congress workers of instigating the violence by carrying sticks and baseball bats.

Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring condemned the incident, criticising the government's handling of law and order.

SSP Saumya Mishra stated that the entire incident was recorded, and an FIR would be lodged after verifying the facts. The police are investigating which side initiated the violence.

BDPO offices to remain open

• As directed by the State Election Commission, Punjab, the Fazilka district administration has announced that Block Development and Panchayat Offices (BDPO) will remain open on October 2 and 3, despite being holidays, to facilitate the issuance of no-objection certificates (NOCs) for panchayat elections
• The offices of the five blocks in the district will operate as usual on Wednesday and Thursday, enabling candidates to obtain the required NOCs for filing nomination papers. This move aims at ensuring a seamless and hassle-free experience for those participating in the elections
