Anjum Kayal, Khajuwala Circle officer, and Ramesh Sarbata, SHO, said Roop Singh Valmiki (30) of Nasira Khilchi village near Ferozepur and Harmesh Singh (20) of Ram Singh Wala village in Valtoha tehsil of Tarn Taran had been arrested.

The 127 Battalion of the BSF posted at the Khajuwala sector near Satrana had observed some persons approaching the fence on the wee hours of Friday and challenged them. When they tried to flee, BSF personnel fired two rounds. Footprints of five persons were noticed on the other side of the fence.

A preliminary probe suggested that four persons from Punjab had gone to Khajuwala to collect a consignment of 56.5 kg contraband. It is yet to be ascertained whether they were used as couriers or were directly involved in drug business.

A Narcotics Control Board team led by Jodhpur zonal director Ugamdan Charan has started an investigation into the case along with the BSF and the police. — OC
