The Congress has fielded District Bar Association president Ranjit Kumar as its candidate for the reserved Chabbewal Assembly seat.

Ranjit, who had contested the last parliamentary elections on the BSP ticket, had ‘secretly’ joined the Congress about a week ago. Former minister Sunder Sham Arora had played an instrumental role in his joining the party.

Ranjit, who has been practising in the Hoshiarpur District Court since 1997, had started his political career with the BSP in 2002 and became its state general secretary in 2020. He has also been a nominated member of the Bar Council of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and is a trustee of Ambedkar Bhawan Trust, Jalandhar.
