Amritsar jeweller thrashed, robbed of gold worth Rs70L

Two unidentified armed robbers attacked a local jeweller and decamped with a bag containing over 2,500 gm of gold ornaments worth lakhs.

The victim identified as Surinder Bhola, a resident of Kallu Da Akhara, was admitted to a private hospital with serious head injuries.

The police have registered a case in this regard, but there has been no breakthrough so far. They said the victim was out of danger.

According to information, Bhola came from Delhi on a bus and took his scooter from the parking of the local railway station and moved towards his residence in the wee hours of Thursday. He was travelling on the new railway overbridge from the wrong side, when two motorcycle-borne youths came from behind and tried to snatch his bag containing gold ornaments worth over Rs 70 lakh.

Bhola having a stout built entered into a scuffle with the looters. They, however, hit on his head with ‘datars’ following which he fell down and the accused snatched the bag and fled the spot.

Harvinder Singh, SHO, Division D police station, said a case under Section 379B (2) of the IPC has been registered against unknown persons and further investigations were underway.

“We are working on different aspects of the case. The possibility of the involvement of an insider could not be ruled out as the robbers knew about the movements of the victim,” he said, adding that the police were looking into the footage of the CCTV cameras around the area where the incident took place.
