The Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly — Partap Singh Bajwa — on Wednesday demanded that the state government launch a rehabilitation programme for those deported from the US.

“They are our sons and daughters, and we must accept them. Without an appropriate rehabilitation programme, they may plunge into despair and depression or rather resort to drug addiction and criminal activities,” Bajwa said.

“The Aam Aadmi Party government must not let them go astray. It should extend a helping hand. Employment as per their qualification and financial assistance should be given to them,” he added.

The Congress leader said if not supported now, the youngsters, most of whom belong to poor families, will be left with nothing to fall back on.

He also sought strict legal action against illegal travel agents to prevent such cases in future.

“It was one of the main election planks of AAP to stop the brain drain by motivating youngsters to explore careers in the home state. Now, even after three years of coming to power, AAP failed awfully to produce any positive outcome,” he added.
