Demanding investigation by an independent agency into vandalising of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s statue followed by an attempt to burn the stone sculpture of the Constitution in Amritsar, a delegation of senior BJP leaders met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Chandigarh on Wednesday.

They said the incident was part of a larger conspiracy to incite unrest and deepen communal divide in Punjab.

Justifying the demand for a probe by an independent agency, not under the control of the state government, BJP leaders said the spot was just 100 m away from the police station, still the incident occurred. “There is a strong apprehension that the said deplorable incident could not have happened without the involvement of the state machinery and the ruling AAP government,” a BJP spokesperson said.
