Since there is shortage of specialist coaches, the district administration will take services of coaches from the Army and BSF who will provide advanced training to these youths. The goal is to ensure that they can eventually compete at both national and international levels. Rajesh Dhiman, DC

The initiative aims to enable them excel as athletes in various games.

DC Rajesh Dhiman said that under the scheme, the district administration has initially selected 100 youths who will receive comprehensive training through sports science and biomechanics at Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Sports University, Patiala. This will help them enhance their skills with modern techniques.

“Additionally, the administration has roped in a few private hospitals to provide top-notch medical care to these youths so that they can take care of their health and become good athletes,” said the DC.

It must also be noted that the border district has a rich legacy in sports, particularly in hockey, shooting, rowing and kabaddi wherein it has produced several renowned players who have brought laurels to the nation.

He further said that a state-of-the-art AstroTurf hockey field has already been set up at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium. Besides, an eight-lane synthetic track is also under construction to groom the athletes with best facilities.

The DC mentioned that the selected ‘Super 100’ youths will be honoured by Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on the Republic Day. “The initiative not only aims to produce elite athletes, but also to keep the youths engaged so that instead of falling prey to drugs, they can contribute to the nation and achieve excellence in sports.”
