BSF, police seize explosives, arms in border village

The Border Security Force (BSF), in a joint operation with the police, seized explosives, suspected to be RDX, arms and ammunition at Chak Bala border village in the Ajnala area here on Friday.

The seizure was made after a farmer harvesting wheat crop in a field noticed a yellow packet and informed the village defence committee, BSF and the police.

The BSF and the police teams cordoned off the area and carried out an extensive search, leading to the seizure of another packet around 50 m away from the first spot.

In all, they seized 4.8 kg explosives, six detonators, two remote control units, five hand grenades, four pistols, eight magazines, batteries, two power circuits and 220 live cartridges.

This was one of the biggest seizures of explosives from the border area over the past several years, said a BSF official.

The consignment was dropped by drones, said Amritsar (Rural) SSP Maninder Singh.

A BSF official said the seizure was made around 1 pm. One packet, weighing around 7 kg, contained three pistols, six magazines, 171 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 14 batteries of different capacities, five hand grenades, six fuse mechanisms and two remote control units. The second packet (weighing around 6.5 kg) contained a US-made pistol, two magazines, 49 bullets and two packets of explosives.

Maninder Singh said a case had been registered at the Ajnala police station and the investigation was on.
