The carcass of a male swamp deer (barasingha) was found near NFL hospital in Nangal this morning. No sooner did forest officials reached there, an information was received that a bullet-riddled carcass of another male swamp deer was found close to the spot near Nangal’s focal point, sending alarm bells ringing in the Department of Forests & Wildlife Preservation.

Wildlife officials and veterinary doctors, after examining the carcass, said the bison appears to be a victim of a roadkill. “Regarding the bullet-ridden carcass, a post mortem would be conducted and bullet count recorded. Roughly there are around 4-5 bullet marks,” said officials.

Wild boar and blue bull are categorised as vermin in Rupnagar district. A farmer can apply for a permit to kill wild boar and blue bull entering his fields to protect his crop.
