A sarpanch owing allegiance to the Congress courted controversy after a video allegedly showing him firing in the air went viral today.
The video was shot on Friday evening when Hafizabad village sarpanch Amandeep Singh was celebrating his birthday at his residence.
Amandeep said it was his birthday on Friday and he had hosted a party for his friends and relatives at his home.
Following the cake-cutting ceremony, he opened fire with his father’s rifle, he said. His father Ranjit Singh is a former sarpanch of the village.
Amandeep said he was not aware that celebratory firing was not allowed and he came to know about it only after the clip went viral and mediapersons started enquiring about it from him.
Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma said the police were investigating the case and appropriate action would be taken if any violation was found.
