Taking a bold step toward animal welfare and public safety, the foundation stone for a Veterinary Surgery Centre for stray dogs was laid in Chuhar Chak, Moga, under the “Barking for a Better Punjab” initiative.

The centre will focus on the humane treatment of stray dogs through sterilization and vaccination, alongside community education on responsible pet care. Plans are underway to establish an adoption centre to rehabilitate and rehome ill or abandoned animals as well.

This development comes amid increasing reports of stray dog attacks across Punjab, including incidents where children were mauled and elderly persons injured by packs of dogs, sparking public concern and the need for urgent intervention.

The project’s success is credited to Surinder Pal Sharma, an NRI who, with the support of local leaders has been working for two years to modernize his native village. The initiative has received strong backing from NRIs and locals alike.

The event of laying the foundation stone was led by Dr JPS Gill, Vice Chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and attended by Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University. Shri Bal Mukund Sharma, Chairman of the Punjab State Food Commission, moderated the ceremony. Other key attendees included senior civil and police officials such as Amardeep Singh Rai (ADGP, Traffic) and Kahan Singh Pannu (former IAS).
