Two days after Akali leader Bikram Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance in a drugs and disproportionate assets case, anxiety has gripped a section of the Congress leaders who are already facing inquiries by the Vigilance Bureau (VB).

The Punjab Congress leadership apprehends that the AAP government’s anti-corruption narrative would target the Congress leaders facing Vigilance inquiries in the run-up to the 2027 Assembly elections.

Former CM and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi said several Congress leaders, including Pargat Singh, were under the radar of the VB. He said, "After Majithia, Pargat is the next target of the government. The AAP leaders are after all those politicians who are vocal against it. They have already been after me for a long time".

Among the leaders who are facing vigilance inquiries include former CM Charanjit Singh Channi, PPCC Chief and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Raja Warring, MLAs Barindemeet Singh Pahra and Pargat Singh, former ministers Sunder Shyam Arora and Vijay Inder Singla, besides other leaders.

A charge-sheet has been filed in cases registered against former MLA Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon and former minister OP Soni.

Party sources said anticipating arrest, Pargat Singh has gone underground. Efforts to contact him remained futile as his phone and that of his PA remained off for the third consecutive day today.

Amarinder Raja Warring said the Congress would expose the political vendetta of the ruling party, after it acts against his party leaders. “It would be premature to comment at this moment.”

Former minister and Rajasthan Congress general secretary in charge Sukhwinder Randhawa said the “false narrative” of the AAP would bounce back as the ruling party lies exposed. “It would give sympathy to the leaders being targeted,” he said.

Cong leaders question party leaders for supporting Majthia

Congress leader Brinder Dhillon in a tweet on ‘X’ said “Leaders from congress defending Bikram Majithia — what bigger irony? We once demanded his arrest, removed our own CM for not acting on Badals & Majithia, and celebrated the FIR. Now this U-turn? 2017: “Jail Majithia!” 2025: “Hail Majithia?” We should make up our mind — public memory isn’t that short. Politics can’t be about what’s trending today. It must be about memory and principles. It has to be about what we stood for yesterday — and what we’re still willing to stand for today”.
