Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAs the flood situation in Punjab is worsening, Punjab Congress leadership on Tuesday targeted CM Bhagwant Mann for allegedly “abandoning” the flood-ravaged people of Punjab.
Questioning the absence of the CM from Punjab, CLP leader Partap Bajwa said, “While large swathes of Punjab remain submerged under floodwaters, the Chief Minister is away in Tamil Nadu. What kind of leader leaves his people to fend for themselves during a humanitarian crisis? This is not just negligence — it is absolute dereliction of duty and criminal irresponsibility.”
He cited the massive destruction across Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Fazilka and parts of Hoshiarpur, where rising waters from the Ravi, Beas and Satluj rivers have engulfed entire villages, wiped out standing crops, flooded homes and forced hundreds to evacuate with barely any government assistance in sight.
The CLP leader said, “The people of Punjab are left to plug breaches with their bare hands, organise their own rescue operations and arrange food and relief, as the CM is busy in photo-ops in another state.”
He further accused the Mann-led government of gross administrative failure by ignoring repeated meteorological warnings and early alerts from neighbouring Himachal Pradesh about the rising water levels due to incessant rainfall.
“They had the data, the warnings, the reports — and yet they chose to sleep through it. Now, when destruction is already upon us, they are scrambling for damage control with hollow PR campaigns,” Bajwa lashed out.
PPCC chief Amarinder Raja Warring said the CM has left the state to its own destiny, and is flying off deep south to Chennai in Tamil Nadu to be present at the launch of a breakfast scheme for schoolchildren there.
The CM should have should have cancelled all engagements; been here to personally monitor the situation and focus on flood control and relief measures in his own state.
“The state had been warned well in advance. Advance flood preparation is the standard norm of any government and AAP failed even in the standard practice,” he said.
