Couple killed, 9 injured as two cars collide head-on near Phagwara

Preliminary investigations suggested that the accident occurred due to slippery road conditions caused by rain

A road accident on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur highway near Dhande Mor claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left nine persons injured late Thursday night.

According to SHO, Sadar, Dilbag Singh, the deceased have been identified as Mukhtiar Singh (70),  and his wife, Dharam Kaur, both residents of Jagjitpur village near Phagwara.

The accident occurred when Mukhtiar Singh was returning home from a wedding ceremony in his car. As he approached Dhande-turn, a car coming from the Phagwara side collided head-on with his vehicle. The impact was so severe that Mukhtiar Singh and his wife died on the spot.

Nine other individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to the Civil Hospital. Among the injured are Sukhwinder Singh (son of Mukhtiar Singh) and his children Naina Devi, Avleen Kaur, Samarveer and Gurlaj Kaur, besides occupants of the other car, Mohan Lal, Binder, Mamta and Barkha.

Some of the injured persons, while getting treatment at the local Civil Hospital.

The condition of all injured is said to be stable. SHO Dilbag Singh stated that preliminary investigations suggested that the accident occurred due to slippery road conditions caused by rain. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted tomorrow. So far, no formal statements have been recorded from either party involved in the accident.
