Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAfter visiting several flood-affected villages in Fazilka district, CPI leader and Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar today wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the Centre to announce a special relief package for Punjab.
The MP said the unprecedented floods have caused massive devastation.
“Entire stretches of farmland lie submerged, crops are destroyed, cattle have perished and houses have been reduced to rubble,” he wrote. He pointed out that villages in Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Mansa and Patiala remain inundated or severely damaged, leaving lakhs of people vulnerable to hunger, disease and displacement.
While praising the tireless efforts of the SDRF, NDRF, the Army, volunteers and people’s organisations, Kumar stressed that the “sheer scale of the disaster far outstrips the relief currently available.”
He urged the Union Government to immediately release substantial relief funds, compensate farmers for crop and cattle losses, rehabilitate displaced families, ensure support for the next cropping season, and strengthen health services to prevent epidemics.
“The resilience of the people is strong, but what is urgently needed now is decisive support from the Union Government,” he said.
