Punjab Congress leaders, led by state party chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, on Wednesday staged a protest outside the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office here, terming the chargesheet filed against party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case as “political vendetta”.

They also accused the BJP-led Union government of “misusing” Central agencies and trying to “defame” the Gandhis by levelling “false” charges against them. They also raised slogans against the Centre while holding placards and banners to lodge their protest.

The Central agency has accused Sonia Gandhi and Rahul of allegedly laundering Rs 988 crore. The chargesheet also names senior Congress leaders Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey as co-accused. Led by Warring, the protesters gathered outside the ED office and staged a sit-in.

Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, MLAs Rana Gurjeet Singh and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and former minister Balbir Singh Sidhu also took part in the protest. Warring alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the help of the ED and a “pliant media” wants to build a perception suggesting corruption by the Gandhis.

“Modi could not find any evidence against the Gandhis during 10 years of the NDA rule. Where is the money that was laundered?” he asked.
