The police team had taken Ramjot Singh alias Jot of Moga for weapon recovery in connection with a ₹1 crore extortion case when he opened fire on them. The police retaliated, injuring him before overpowering him. A .32 bore pistol along with live cartridges was recovered from the spot, informed SSP Faridkot Pragya Jain.
Ramjot Singh was already arrested in the extortion case along with Sandeep Singh alias Lovely, who were picked up by police from Kotkapura on September 7. Another conspirator, Malkit Singh of Moga, was brought on production warrant from Central Jail, Faridkot on September 8. Investigations revealed the crime was carried out at the behest of gangsters Sema Behbal and Jass Bahibal, both active members of the Bambiha gang, shared SSP Jain.
Ramjot has previous bookings in three cases under the NDPS Act and Arms Act and was released from Faridkot Jail on July 30. Sandeep Singh is also an accused in a robbery case. Malkit Singh is a habitual offender with five cases against him, including NDPS, Arms Act, attempt to murder and extortion.
The Bambiha gang operatives were booked in an extortion case in Kotkapura in April. When extortion money was not paid, gang members attempted firing outside the victim's house on September 1. Acting on intelligence, police arrested the accused as part of their crackdown on organised crime.
