The farm labourers have demanded compensation from the government for losses due to paddy and basmati cultivation using the direct sowing of rice (DSR) technique.

Lachman Singh Sewewala, general secretary, Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, said: “The state government is promoting DSR technique, but it has not thought about the farm labourers. As per a survey done by us, farm labourers have suffered a loss of nearly Rs 90 lakh this paddy sowing season in Muktsar, Amritsar, Bathinda, Fazilka and Gurdaspur districts.” — TNS
