The police have arrested five persons accused of robbing a trader of 1.2 kg gold a few minutes after he reached here by a train on Tuesday morning. The victim, identified as Anna Maratha, was allegedly kidnapped and taken out of the town where he was robbed of gold.

SSP Varinder Singh Brar told the mediapersons at Abohar that five locals, identified as — Jashanpreet Singh Jashan, a resident of Seed Farm, Bharat Kumar and Kamal Kumar Shiva, residents of Sant Nagar, Charanjit Singh Channu, a resident of Jammu Basti and Sunny Soni, a resident of Nai Abadi — have been arrested. A case had been registered under Sections 365, 392 and 506 of the IPC. Cops recovered gold and sharp-edged weapons from their possession. The car used by the accused for the crime has also been impounded. Three of the accused had criminal cases registered against them here in the past.

Anna, the director of Anna Gold Testing Laboratory located in the old grain market, had brought the gold from Delhi, which was to be purified before supplying it to the local goldsmiths. Sunny, an employee at his shop and who was accompanying Maratha, had walked back to his Nai Abadi house from the station when the crime occurred.
