The police on Sunday claimed to have arrested a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after a brief exchange of fire near Malout town.

During a routine patrol and checking operation on Saturday night, the Malout CIA team tried to stop a man riding a motorcycle on the Abohar road on the outskirts of Malout town, said Muktsar DSP(D) Ramanpreet Singh Gill.

“On seeing the police, the suspect tried to flee. When the cops chased him, he opened fire on them. In retaliation, the police also opened fire, during which the suspect sustained a bullet injury on the leg. He was taken into custody and rushed to the Malout Civil Hospital for treatment,” said the DSP.

The suspect has been identified as Abhishek, a resident of Sitto Gunno village in Fazilka district. “A member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, he used to supply weapons. Two cases of robbery are already registered against him in Haryana,” said the DSP.
