Gangster Bikramjit Singh Vicky, an accused in the murder of AAP worker Gurpreet Singh Gopi of Chohla Sahib, was injured in a police encounter on Friday night, said officials.

Gopi was shot dead on March 1 near Fatehbad village in which Bikramjit Singh, a resident of Sursingh village in Tarn Taran, was the alleged shooter. He was arrested in a joint operation of the Uttar Pradesh and Punjab Police few days back in Lucknow.

Tarn Taran SSP Abhimanyu Rana said that accused Bikramjit Singh was brought on production warrant from Uttar Pradesh.

The encounter took place when a team of Goindwal Sahib police took him in the Mand area to recover the weapon used in the crime, he said.

Later, the accused used the weapon during the recovery, which was already loaded, and opened fire at the team. A police vehicle was also hit during the firing, said the SSP.

In retaliation by police, Bikramjit Singh was hit in his leg. He was admitted at Khadoor Sahib hospital and was latter referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. Further investigation is under way, he added.
