Ghonewal breach too deep, volunteers struggle to plug it

Volunteers of the Kar Sewa Guru Ka Bagh and the district administration involved in the plugging of a massive breach in Ghonewal village are facing problems because of its huge depth.

The gap was the biggest among the 20 breaches reported from Ajnala subdivision. The breach was around 500m long and led to the inundation of nearly 190 villages in Ramdass, Ajnala, Rajasansi and Lopoke. The work on plugging the breach at Ghonewal in Ramdass was started on September 3. Till now, only half of the breach has been plugged.

Initially, a pit created by the breach was thought to be around 25-30 ft deep, but as the work progressed, it was found to be even deeper. The volunteers are now draining out the water.

“The material, including sacks filled with soil drown without trace. It appears that the breach is around 50ft deep,” said volunteer Ajit Singh. Jodh Singh Samra, a SAD leader, said the administration had approached various Kar Sewa groups to repair breaches. The help of Army and other departments concerned has also been sought.
