He has been elected MLA three times previously — in 2002–07 as an independent, and in 2007–12 and 2012–17 as a SAD representative.

The bypoll that brought Sandhu to the Assembly was necessitated by the demise of sitting MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. In the November 14 election, he defeated his nearest SAD rival by a margin of over 12,000 votes.

Before taking the oath, Sandhu called on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who directed officials to complete all development works promised to the people of Tarn Taran on a war footing. Speaking after the ceremony, Sandhu thanked the voters for reposing their faith in him. Speaker Sandhwan said the Assembly would benefit from Sandhu’s rich experience.
