The Punjab and Haryana High Court has declined to grant immediate relief to AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura who is challenging his conviction in a 12-year-old assault and molestation case.

During Tuesday’s hearing on the petition filed by Lalpura, the court dismissed his request to stay the sentence for now.

It said that no proceedings have yet been initiated to cancel his assembly membership, and therefore it does not see the need for immediate intervention at this stage.

The matter has been adjourned for further hearing next month.

The court has directed the state to submit the complete case records on the next hearing.

Lalpura, along with seven others, was convicted earlier this year by a court in Tarn Taran for molesting a woman during an event that occurred over a decade ago.

He was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment, a term that triggers automatic disqualification under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Supreme Court’s 2013 Lily Thomas case.
