Heavy rain likely for 2 days: IMD

The weather department has predicted that heavy to very heavy rain is likely to continue in some parts of north-west India over the next two days, with light to moderate rain at most places over the next seven days.

Describing the monsoon activity in Punjab as “vigorous”, a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said during the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places in the state, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Barnala was the wettest district, experiencing 79.6 mm rainfall, followed by Patiala (51.4 mm) and Kaputhala (48.7 mm). Fazilka and Mukutsar were the only districts that remained dry.

Seasonal rainfall in Punjab has been surplus by 48 per cent so far. From June 1 to September 2, the state received 547.7 mm rainfall compared to the long-period average of 369.5 mm for this period. The monsoon in the neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana has been surplus by 45 per cent and 39 per cent, respectively.
