An umbrella group of teachers’ unions on Wednesday laid siege to the Punjab School Education Board building in Sector 62, Mohali, seeking job regularisation and salary enhancement.

Hundreds of teachers reached the seventh floor of the building to lay siege to the office of the Education Secretary. Around five persons were seen on top of the building with petrol-filled bottles in their hands.

A heavy police force, led by Mohali SSP Satinder Singh, is present at the spot.

Close to 500 temporary, ad-hoc teachers gheraoed the building, demanding a meeting with the Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla.

The protesters claimed that a meeting of the teachers with the minister scheduled to be held on Tuesday was postponed till June 22. The agitated teachers claimed they will not return without reaching any conclusion. Conservative estimates peg close to 6,500 temporary teachers in the state. Some of the agitating teachers said they are teaching in various government schools for 18 years now but their salary is only Rs 6,000.
