Punjab Water Resources and Horticulture Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra today laid the foundation stone of the reconstruction work of Azamwala Minor Canal. The 13.41 km long sub-canal, with an estimated cost of over Rs 9.5 crore, will enhance irrigation facilities for approximately 13,685 acres and ensure full water reach to the tail end.

Jouramajra said that the state government is committed to revitalize surface water infrastructure in the state. He said that the state government has restored and strengthened approximately 14 thousand km of water courses in the state. Emphasising maximum use of canal water, he pointed out its potential to conserve underground water and reduce electricity consumption for the agriculture sector. The Minister also encouraged farmers to adopt drip irrigation, with subsidies provided by the Punjab Government.

Jouramajra acknowledged the challenges faced by kinnow growers and cited the government’s intervention to support them during a bumper crop. The CM has initiated the procurement of kinnow through Punjab Agro, with the fruit being included in mid-day meals to ensure fair prices for farmers, he added.
