The Malerkotla district Congress made its presence felt in the region by organising tractor rallies and protest marches with intent to underscore solidarity with farmers protesting at Shambhu and Khanauri borders.
The organisers, led by district president Jaspal Singh and former minister Razia Sultana, used all means at their disposal to protest against the BJP-led Union Government.
The protestors raised slogans to apprise the masses about alleged repressive conduct of Haryana Police against peacefully protesting farmers. Demands for registration of FIR against Haryana Home Minister, Haryana Police and justice for deceased young farmer Shubkaran Singh emerged with high-pitched slogans.
Malerkotla district Congress president Jaspal Singh said that farmers, including workers of Malerkotla district congress had responded warmly to the call made by PPCC President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring to participate in tractor rallies and protest marches held in the region today. “Not only the farmers, but members of other sections of society joined us in the protest as they were upset that the Union Government and Haryana Police had repressed the peacefully protesting farmers to stop them from proceeding towards Delhi,” said Jaspal.
Gurjot Singh Dhindsa, convener of another tractor rally, said that groups of Congress activists had shown inclination to organise langars at the morcha venues under the banner of Congress party. “As we are yet to receive further instructions, we have started preparations for organising langars and will leave as and when advised by senior functionaries in the Pradesh Congress Committee,” he said.
