Man attacks people with iron rod at Golden Temple inn, 5 injured

A Haryana man who attacked and injured five persons, including two sewadars, with an iron rod at an inn on the Golden Temple complex here on Friday has been sent to two-day police custody.

On Friday afternoon, a man holding an iron rod, identified as Julfan of Shadipur village in Haryana’s Yamunanagar, was seen roaming on the second floor of Guru Ram Dass Serai by sewadar Jasbir Singh, who questioned him and told him to leave. The accused however did not go and attacked Jasbir with the iron rod. As other employees and people intervened to catch him, he attacked them too. However, he was overpowered and beaten up in the heat of the moment. He was later handed over to the police.

A case under Sections 118(1) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against him on the statement of Jasbir Singh, a resident of Sohian Kalan in Amritsar.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the family members of the accused were contacted on Friday night and they informed that he had left home to buy some medicines from Mullana, a town over 30 km away from Yamunanagar district, three days ago. He did not return home since then. No missing complaint was made to the police.

A team would be sent to Yamunanagar to trace his antecedents and ascertain the motive of the attack, said Bhullar.

On December 18, 2021, angry sangat had killed a man after he had allegedly tried to commit sacrilege in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple. The then Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi, had directed the state police authorities to thoroughly probe the matter and identify the motive and conspirators of the dastardly act. Four years down the line, the police have even failed to ascertain the identity of the deceased.
