Man murdered over ‘illicit’ relationship

A man was allegedly beaten to death over suspected illicit relationship in Tibbi Bharain village, situated adjacent to Faridkot town, late on Sunday night. A companion of the deceased sustained serious injuries in the attack.

While the police have detained a woman and her husband from the village, it is alleged that Gurpreet Singh, 30, the victim, was beaten to death by some villagers.

It is alleged that Gurpreet, a resident of Dogar Basti, Faridkot, used to visit the house of a woman in Tibbi Bharai. Her husband objected to this. Late on Sunday evening, Gurpreet had allegedly reached the woman’s house with a friend. The 30-year-old had a heated exchange with the woman’s family members. During the commotion, an elderly woman of the family died of shock.

On learning about the woman’s death, villagers gathered at the house. Some villagers allegedly chased the victim and his friend. A scuffle ensued, leading to Gurpreet’s death. His friend is admitted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital here.

DSP Tarlochan Singh said the entire matter was being investigated by the police. The preliminary investigation revealed that Gurpreet had been visiting the woman’s house for the past some time. The police have taken the said couple into custody and started an investigation.
