Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Wednesday slammed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his “one nation, one husband” scheme remark, saying it reflected that he did not understand the sensitivity of the Hindu community.

He also accused the CM of indulging in cheap politics and rejected Mann’s allegation that the BJP was using Operation Sindoor to garner votes in the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll, scheduled for June 19.

Mann had levelled the accusations on Tuesday, triggering a political row.

The CM had said, “Has the BJP now started the ‘one nation, one husband’ scheme? If they (BJP workers) come to your house to give ‘sindoor’ (vermilion), will you take it?”

“They are seeking votes in the name of sindoor and want to send it to every house. They are insulting the importance of sindoor,” he added.

Reacting to it, Jakhar said the comment was against the state’s religious and social harmony. The state BJP chief also questioned as to why ruling Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal had not “reprimanded” Mann for his “irresponsible statement on the Operation Sindoor”.

Jakhar brushed aside the allegation that the BJP was trying to take credit of the military operation under which terror camps in Pakistan were targeted in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

He said the armed forces did not belong to one party but to the entire nation.

Lashing out at AAP, Jakhar said if their leaders did not apologise for the statement, it meant they were “pushing the Pakistani agenda” to destroy social and culture harmony in the state.

He alleged that AAP was trying to “create fissures” among different communities.
