The police said Malkiat, a native of Rajasansi, Amritsar, tried to flee from the custody and opened fire, hitting a police vehicle. "In retaliation, cops fired at him and one bullet hit his left leg," said Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar.

He was later taken to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital.

Maxi had reportedly made a call to a Mohali-based builder recently to seek Rs 50 lakh. A case under Sections 308(2) of the BNS was registered at IT City, Mohali, on January 20.

Malkiat and his accomplice Sandeep were brought on production warrants and arrested in this case. Malikat's disclosure had led to the recovery of a .32 calibre pistol near the Ghagar bridge in Derra Bassi.

Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek said, "He has many cases of extortion and Arms Act against him. When he was brought here for recovery of arms, he took advantage of the situation and fired at the police. The policemen had a narrow escape as the bullet hit their vehicle, after which they retaliated and a bullet hit Maxi’s leg."
