Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsWith Punjab facing one of its most devastating floods in recent years, impacting nearly 1,900 villages and submerging over four lakh hectares of fertile land, the Department of Cooperation, Government of Punjab, along with Milkfed Punjab (Verka) and its affiliated Milk Unions, has mobilised a large-scale relief operation to support both people and livestock caught in the deluge.
Inundated villages have left dairy farmers unable to transport milk. Milkfed teams reached milk collection points by boats and makeshift carriers, ensuring raw milk procurement even from waterlogged areas.
With thousands of cattle stranded in submerged sheds, Milkfed also prioritised animal survival. In coordination with affiliated Milk Unions, it is supplying cattle feed and bran at subsidised rates.
On the human relief front, through the district administrations, Milkfed is supplying milk and milk powder in flood-hit areas. In addition to dairy supplies, Milkfed and its Unions have pledged to distribute 15,000 food kits to families stranded by floodwaters.
In a press release, officials from the Department of Cooperation said, “In the face of an unprecedented challenge, Milkfed Punjab and its Unions have demonstrated resilience by not only supporting farmers and livestock but also ensuring that no family is left without essentials.”
