MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla seeks AIIMS for Amritsar district

Several MPs from Punjab on Friday sought upgradation in medical infrastructure of the state, pointing out shortage of doctors and requirement of hospitals.
Participating in the discussion on demands for grants of the Health Ministry in the Lok Sabha, Bathinda MP from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Harsimrat Kaur Badal lamented that allocation for health infrastructure was inadequate even as money is often spent on building tall statues and bullet trains.
She urged the Centre to sanction outstanding dues for health facilities in the state and pointed out that AIIMS Bathinda despite receiving thousands of patients, had only 28 beds in the emergency ward. Badal also alleged that due to the tussle between BJP-led central government and AAP-led state government in Punjab was leading to patients not getting adequate facilities.
Congress MP Gurjeet Aujla from Amritsar said the city could be developed as a medical hub where patients from Pakistan could avail affordable medical care. He also sought an AIIMS for Amritsar and called for upgradation for the 100-year old Amrtisar medical college.
Another Congress MP from Ferozepur Sher Singh Ghubaya said his region has several cancer patients and despite a Rs 500 crore grant given for setting up a PGI in 2012, work on it was yet to start. He also sought a cancer hospital from the Centre for his constituency. — TNS
